View from Above: The Fast Facts of Drone Use on Construction Sites

There’s no doubt about it – drones are changing the way we do business. As technology develops, drone use on construction sites is becoming increasingly popular, and rightfully so. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, are a cost-effective way for owner, contractor, architect and engineer to monitor job progress in real-time. Drone videos are an efficient alternative to expensive weekly trips for owners who can view the footage at the click of a button.

But after a series of incidents in recent months, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) began regulating these previously unrestricted aircrafts.

Here are some things to know before you take flight: 1

  • You must register your drone with the FAA prior to flying
  • Fly below 400 feet and remain clear of surrounding obstacles
  • Keep the aircraft within visual line of sight at all times
  • Remain well clear of and do not interfere with manned aircraft operations
  • Don’t fly within 5 miles of an airport unless you contact the airport and control tower before flying
  • Don’t fly near people or stadiums
  • Don’t fly an aircraft that weighs more than 55 pounds
  • Don’t be careless or reckless with your unmanned aircraft; you could be fined for endangering people or other aircraft

Of course you should also read the FAA’s full list of regulations for Unmanned Aircraft Systems and pay particular attention to the section on Model Aircraft Operations before flying.

Know Before You Fly is an education campaign founded by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) and the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) in partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to educate prospective users about the safe and responsible operation of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). 2
