SUCCESS STORIES

Murphey Middle School
One of the major contributions of RW Allen was the extensive use of building information modeling (BIM). Through the use of RW Allen’s in-house BIM Coordinator, the project team was able to rectify the following:
- Missing structural columns at roof locations.
- Columns designed in the middle of window openings.
- Straight beams specified in radius locations.
- Relocation of ductwork to avoid high ceilings and roof slopes.
- Specifications for glass behind sloped roofs.
- Removal of some exterior windows and the addition of seats to bar joists to eliminate the potential for trapping water around the roof feature and elevator roof.

Whitehead Elementary
During the construction of Whitehead Elementary, the BIM team modeled the entire project, beginning with the structure and mechanical systems. During modeling, we discovered that the ductwork was too large to fit within the ceilings. The system called for one return air duct and one supply duct from the 3rd floor to the mezzanine to each hallway on the first and second floor of the school. Because of the size requirements as drawn, the ductwork was too large to fit within the ceiling, causing the system to be installed below the ceiling. The other option would be for the architect and engineer to reconfigure the steel structure of the entire facility, causing major delays in project completion. Not wanting a construction delay, our BIM team got to work, looking at alternative duct options to work within the current ceiling system. Digitally experimenting with different size ducts and split airflows, the BIM team successfully redesigned the entire duct design to fit within the existing ceiling design without having to raise steel. Because of BIM, the Owner experienced significant cost and time savings.
Merial
Merial’s existing location included interstitial space above the first floor which housed its mechanical units that serviced the entire facility. The interstitial space had low eave heights in addition to housing the support structure for the mechanical units. But Merial needed more space and wanted to use a portion of the interstitial space for additional offices. Through the use of BIM, RW Allen was able to determine the usable space and the relocation methods to convert the interstitial space into a second floor. Through this solution, RW Allen was able to provide significant cost savings because Merial did not have to build another facility in order to expand.
