R.W. Allen Gives Back: Creating an Outdoor Classroom
Debbie Brown knew she wanted to revitalize a cluttered outdoor storage area for her puppetry and visual arts students at Davidson Fine Arts School, but she had no idea how she was going to do it. An encounter with Congressman Rick Allen led to a phone call from Scott Clark, President & Chief Operating Officer of R.W. Allen. Through donations of time and resources, R.W. Allen was able to take Ms. Brown’s dream and make it a reality.
With direction and assistance from R.W. Allen equipment manager Dennis Smith, subcontractors installed new florescent lighting, mesh fence screening, a roof over the storage area, fans for ventilation, a brick walkway, retractable extension cords over the workbenches and a new emergency exit gate.
In an interview with a local news station, Brown said, “It has been so energizing for the kids, and for me. It’s a novelty. There is plenty of space, they enjoy it, it’s more social.”
“I am in love with it,” Brown said. “I wouldn’t go back inside if you paid me.”
